On 30th September The Friendly BenchⓇ an innovative outdoor social space aimed at tackling loneliness, social isolation and building community connections was handed over to the Friends of East Rugby Group (FERG), in Hillmorton.

Founded by Lyndsey Young, The Friendly BenchⓇ CIC has partnered with the FERG to bring the purposefully designed mini community garden with integrated seating and organic, sensory planting to the High Street, Hillmorton to encourage people of all ages and backgrounds to meet, chat, connect with nature, build friendships and find a sense of belonging.

At this time, we would ask all users to observe current coivid19 guidelines and maintain their social distance.

As well as being a beautiful place to sit, The Friendly BenchⓇ are also active social hubs where the local community can  hold regular free activities and events to encourage everyone to participate, have fun, feel accepted and develop a support network. The first formal  event will be the “Halloween Surprise” on 30th and 31st October, more details will be posted on  https://www.facebook.com/FriendsEastRugbyGroup

If you or your community group wants to hold any events at Hillmorton’s Friendly Bench please contact FriendsofE[email protected] .

We would like to thank Hillmorton Charities and Rugby Borough Council’s Community Grant for part funding the project; Richard and David at Batchelors Builders and RGI Surveys for working with us on the project.

Founder Lyndsey Young said:

“We are thrilled to be bringing The Friendly BenchⓇ to Hillmorton. The Friendly BenchⓇ plays a vital role in reconnecting people back to their community and helps tackle loneliness and social isolation which is experienced by so many.

By creating a welcoming, inclusive, accessible and well-located social space to meet, chat, rest and enjoy the benefits of being outside, or by joining in with one of the regularly organised activities, The Friendly BenchⓇ will be a hub for everyone to connect. As well as helping to improve people’s physical and mental wellbeing, The Friendly BenchⓇ will also help strengthen community ties and encourage connections across the generations and with the wider community.

With backing from local residents and community and charity grants and thanks players of the National Lottery who have supported the project through The National Lottery Community Fund, we believe The Friendly BenchⓇ will make a real difference to the lives of people in Hillmorton and its surrounding areas.”

Jill Dwyer, Chair, FERG said, “We are really excited that we have been successful to get the first Friendly BenchⓇ to be installed in Warwickshire and I am proud that Hillmorton has one of the first wave of these amazing facilities to be installed across England. We think it will be a positive addition for the whole community to use.”
