Rugby MP Mark Pawsey welcomes £15 million investment at Emergency Care at University Hospital Coventry

Rugby and Bulkington MP has welcomed an additional £15 million which has been provided by the Government to improve the Emergency Department at University Hospital Coventry.

Initially £3 million has been announced by Government, which will be used by University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS to expand and improve the Emergency Department provision, with remaining funding guaranteed by government. The A&E department treats 150,000 patients per year and has seen a nearly 30% rise in attendances between 2010 and 2019.

The additional funding from Government will also be used to install additional treatment cubicles, expanding the waiting room in the Children’s Emergency Department, increasing the level of same day emergency care and improving diagnostic capacity by providing an additional CT scanner. These improvements are crucial to help meet the demands of winter pressures, especially during the Covid-19 outbreak.

The additional services will support the existing Urgent Care provision at Rugby’s Hospital of St Cross, which operates 24/7 and provides care for minor injuries.

Welcoming the investment in local health care, Mark commented:

“Emergency Care is one of the most important services provided by our NHS and this £15 million investment will ensure that excellent treatment can continue to be provided as the demand for services continues to grow. It is also a clear demonstration of the Government’s commitment to providing the NHS with the funding and support it needs.”

Mark continued:

“However, whilst I welcome the expansion of provision at University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire, I do remain determined that additional services should be provided at the Rugby’s Hospital of St Cross. Rugby is continuing to grow, and the events of recent months have reinforced how valuable high-quality local health provision is.”

Mark concluded:

“I will therefore continue to make the case to my colleagues in the Department of Health and Social Care for additional funding and services to be provided at Rugby’s local hospital.”
