MP welcomes Overseas Operations Bill to prevent veterans from being subjected to vexatious claims

21st September 2020

Local MP Mark Pawsey has welcomed new legislation being introduced to ensure that UK veterans, including Rugby and Bulkington residents, who act within the law will be protected from vexatious litigation.

Speaking in Parliament during questions to Ministers at the Ministry of Defence, Mark recalled meeting a Rugby resident who had served in the Armed Forces at the time the Government was consulting on introducing this legislation. Mark highlighted the concerns of veterans that they could be prosecuted for doing what they were trained for and urged Government Minister Johnny Mercer MP to reassure them they would be protected.

Under new legislation, the Overseas Operations Bill, UK armed forces personnel and veterans serving on military operations overseas will have greater legal protection. The Bill will also help to reduce the uncertainty faced by service personnel and veterans, particularly in cases where they have been subject to repeated investigations, with no new evidence, many years after the original events.

In his response the Minister for Defence People and Veterans, Johnny Mercer MP, set out that all service personnel who operate within the law, would be protected by the Government’s new legislation so they are protected from the types of vexatious claims many have been subjected to over the past few years.

Speaking after Defence Questions, Mark said:

“We all owe our service personnel and veterans a huge debt of thanks for the work they do to keep us safe. Through the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme, I have had the opportunity to spend time with members of our Armed Forces whilst training and whilst on deployment. I know from these experiences, as well as from speaking with veterans here in Rugby, that the training and professionalism of our Armed Forces is second-to-none.”

Mark continued:

“It is therefore absolutely right that the Government takes steps to ensure that they are protected from repeated and vexatious legal claims, often with no new evidence to support this legal action. This is, in my view, wrong and as such I will be supporting the Overseas Operations Bill which will give our veterans this certainty whilst still ensuring that legitimate claims are investigated.”
