New measures to protect Welford’s heritage

Measures have been put in place to protect the architectural and historic interest of Welford.

A new conservation area have been designated in the village covering High Street, Church Street, West End and Hall Lane as well as medieval settlement earthworks to the west of the village and ridge and furrow earthworks to the east.

A number of individual buildings have been ‘locally listed’, and there are proposals to put in place an Article 4 direction to protect historic features on a range of properties in the village.

An appraisal and management plan for the new conservation area has also been adopted as a supplementary planning document, meaning it will be used to help determine planning decisions in Welford in future.

The measures were agreed by Daventry District Council (DDC) during a meeting of Full Council on Thursday 23 July, and follow an extensive study of the village and a public consultation held in February.

It is part of a wider review of the District’s conservation areas, which put in place tighter planning controls for anyone seeking permission to alter or demolish a building, or carry out work to trees, in order to maintain the special interest of the area.

More information about the conservation area in Welford can be viewed at www.daventrydc.gov.uk/ConservationAreas<http://www.daventrydc.gov.uk/ConservationAreas>

Anyone with questions about planning controls should contact DDC’s Development Control department.
