Fit at 50 after losing 6 stone!
Gary Wilkins who is a member of Slimming World, has lost a life-changing 6 stone after challenging himself to be fit for 50
Gary says “After an accident where my leg was crushed, I lost all my confidence and piled the weight on. After losing 6 stone and 2 operations to repair my leg, I feel like a completely different person! I look so different that people who I haven’t seen for a while often can’t believe I’m the same person. I have to say though, it’s the change on the inside that’s been the greatest – I’m happier, healthier and much more confident now.”
The proud 49 -year-old joined Slimming World and introduced body magic during the initial lockdown in March 2020. Gary says: “My weight impacted on so many aspects of my life, from struggling to find clothes that I like to fit, to not being able to do simple everyday tasks without feeling tired and out of breath. Before I lost the weight I was just existing, now I’m full of life and can do so much more”
Garys weight was also putting a huge strain on his health suffered with high blood pressure. Since reaching his target weight his medication for this has been significantly reduced. People who are severely overweight, with a BMI* above 30, are more likely to suffer from health problems like coronary heart disease, arthritis, diabetes and cancer, and obesity is linked to a reduction in life expectancy of between seven and nine years. In Rugby, 65.8 per cent of people are so severely overweight that their health is already at risk.
“I’ve made so many friends at the group and I honestly don’t think I could have done it without their support each week. We all support each other with recipes and tips and if anyone is ever struggling, we are always there to remind each other how far we’ve come.”
Gary followed Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan and swapped like pie for spaghetti bolognese. He says: “People think to lose weight you have to go hungry, it’s not like that at all with Slimming World though. I love food and it’s never once felt like I was on a ‘diet’ – in fact, people are always surprised at how much food I have on my plate and can’t believe I’m losing weight eating so much delicious food and without ever feeling deprived.
“I still enjoy all my favourite meals, I’ve learned how to make small changes like using lean meat or cooking with low-calorie spray instead of oil or butter. Better still, it fits in really well with the rest of my family and we can all eat the same meals. This is a change that I’ve made for life and have the tools I need to keep it up forever.”
He’s also more active nowadays and regularly runs 15 kilometres weekly with daily walks in between. After starring the couch to 5k during the initial lockdown, Gary has found he loves running and is fitter than ever before.
Maz, his wife and who runs three Slimming World group, says: “I feel so privileged to have witnessed Gary’s transformation. Watching him blossom each week has been wonderful and I hope his success will inspire other people in Rugby who’d like to lose weight and become happier and healthier to take action. There’s always a warm welcome waiting at Slimming World.
