Cricket: Surprise NCL defeat for Willoughby ends unbeaten run but Seconds make semi-finals

Willoughby’s unbeaten run came crashing down in disappointing fashion on Saturday and at an inopportune time as they exited the NCL’s divisional knockout cup at the first hurdle with defeat to Geddington 3rds.

Having topped the Division 6 group format with seven straight victories, including one over the visitors last month, the 20 run defeat against their opponents who finished eighth in the standings meant a surprise early exit from division’s knockout stages at the quarter-final round.

Things had started promising for the hosts as having won the toss and asked Geddington to bat, Willoughby took two early wickets to have the visitors at 5 for 2. However after an uncertain start, Geddington’s Stanley Kirk together with remaining opener Mark Pearson and put on 56 for the third wicket. The latter went for 18 but Kirk went onto make an ultimately decisive 68 as his side’s lower order were countered by three wickets for Willoughby skipper Ben Hollis (3 for 25), Dave Alcock and Mark Fell (2 for 43).

Geddington’s total of 150 for 9 looked achievable on paper but the home side got off to a similar disastrous start in their reply, losing Ian Andrews and then Hassan Nawaz to the bowling of Archie Colwill to also fall to 5 for 2. With opener Kamesh Ganti also departing after a quick-fire 22, Ashley Rayner and Chaitana Kursala looked to have restored parity and put Willoughby back in the driving seat. But their departures for 38 and 40 either side of the home side reaching three figures would not be built on by the middle to lower order.  The last five wickets fell for only 24 runs as the visitors deservedly earned a 20 run success.

  • In contrast to their 1st team counterparts, Willoughby’s second string booked themselves a semi-final local derby date with Dunchurch and Bilton this Saturday thanks to a massive 199 run win over Kettering Town 5ths.

Despite being drawn as the home side, Willoughby hosted at Barton Seagrave CC’s picturesque ground and having won the toss opted to bat, a decision which saw James Goodwin and Matt Cartridge provide a platform for victory. They put on 137 for the opening wicket which was broken when Cartridge departed for 50.  However Goodwin continued the assault and deservedly reached his ton before leaving the fray. Matt Goss and Rees Moor both added 20 apiece, the latter with Under 13 player Ambrose Deery in a stand of 48 before Willoughby closed on 265 for 7, a score which was perhaps a touch harsh on the Kettering bowling which at times was quite tidy.

With such an imposing target to chase, the visitors were already up against it from the start and had no answer to the Willoughby attack. Only a quick fire 27 from Rehman and 16 from Billington made double figures in the face of Sean Thornton ending up with 5 for 14 and the evergreen John Gregson taking 2 for 10 as Kettering were bowled out for 66.
