Council decision of Eastern Way land disposal

Councillors have approved proposals to provide the Department for Education (DfE) with land off Daventry’s Eastern Way for a new secondary school.

At the meeting of Daventry District Council (DDC) on Thursday, 9 October, Members agreed to dispose of the land, which has identified the need for a third secondary school in the town with around 1,000 places.

The Council’s Corporate Strategic Plan prioritises securing the delivery of a new secondary school in Daventry to help young people in the area meet their potential and reduce numbers travelling out of the area for their education.

A number of sites were explored by the DfE, including the possibility of locating the new school on the proposed new residential development north-east of Daventry (previously known as Churchfields) however these other options were not found to be viable nor fit timescales for the school’s delivery.

Illustrative plans by the DfE show how the site could accommodate a running track and other sports facilities at the Ashby Road end, with the entrance and the school buildings towards Welton Road, near the iCon Centre.

The Council’s Strategy Group initially endorsed the idea at its meeting in July and residents were invited to give their views on the proposed disposal of land during July and August. This generated a range of feedback on issues including traffic and road safety, which will be handled as part of the future planning process, again involving local consultation.
